Menorca Mahon Airport (MAH) Information: History and Facilities
The original Menorca aerodrome was established at the time of the Spanish Civil War by the island's military forces. By the early 1940s, the airport had already established a regular link to nearby Mallorca's airport and featured a runway measuring around 900 metres / 2,950 feet. At this stage, Menorca Airport was named San Luis Airport and officially opened to civilian flights in 1949.
By the early 1960s, the runway had been lengthened considerably and in 1965, the airport was officially renamed Mahon Airport (MAH). Many new routes were implemented at this time and charter flights began, meaning that the airport quickly outgrew itself. The airport was soon to be used mainly by the island's flying club, as in 1969, Menorca opened its new airport nearby and the age of tourism began. By the early 1970s, more than 300,000 passengers per year were using the new Mahon Airport, meaning that the terminal needed to be enlarged.
The year of 1986 saw Menorca's Mahon Airport finally exceed one million passengers in that period and an additional terminal building was built. With passenger levels doubled in less than ten years and still continued to rise, Mahon Airport has made many further improvements over the years, including implementing modern check-in decks and baggage reclaim areas.
Menorca Mahon Airport's two ATMs can be found in the terminal building, as well as a bureau de change facility. For relaxation and sustenance, there are a number of cafés to choose from, such as the Cafeteria Medas in the lobby of arrivals, the Natural Break bar in domestic departures, and also the Cafeteria Solarium on floor two of the passenger terminal, complete with outdoor terrace for those within to enjoy a spot of Mediterranean sunshine.
There is also a good selection of stores at Menorca Mahon Airport for passengers looking to pass their time by shopping. Popular outlets include Aldeasa Travel Value, the Luxor jewellers, the Pas d'en Quint gift shop, and the Sweet Market, selling a range of confectionary. Just a short drive from the airport, the Capri Hotel in Mahon is well equipped for conferences and for visitors with business requirements.
Menorca Mahon Airport (MAH) Information: About Menorca Tourism
Menorca is the second largest of Spain's Balearic Islands and it is tremendously popular as a summer holiday destination for Europeans, especially UK and German citizens. The appeals of the island are its beautiful sandy beaches, such as Son Bou and Punta Prima, and the lively resorts that have been built around a solid tourist infrastructure.
The island's capital city Mahon stands next to Menorca Airport (MAH) and is a fantastic place to explore, with its maze of narrow streets set back from its giant natural harbour, which is hailed as being one of the world's largest. Nightlife on Menorca tends to be quieter than that in nearby Mallorca and Ibiza, meaning that the island is more suited to families and those with a penchant for the sedate.
